Prescribed Fire Councils
Wouldn’t it be great to be part of a group that allowed you the opportunity to share information about training opportunities, liability, habitat management, firing techniques, and many other prescribed burning-related issues that you may otherwise face alone?
Organized at the state and local level, prescribed fire councils offer information-sharing and networking opportunities for private landowners, fire practitioners, agencies, non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and regulators. Members promote prescribed burning by increasing public understanding of the regional importance and benefits of prescribed fire, and by encouraging the exchange of information, techniques, and experiences among practitioners of prescribed fire.
The Councils typically meet one to two times a year, and meetings consist of presentations, reports, and updates; continuing education credits are often available for attendees. This Southern Fire Exchange webpage contains links to upcoming annual meetings for each state.
According to Melvin (2018), thirty-five prescribed fire councils exist in 31 states, and two are under development (see map below).
