May 2023 Synchronous Session of Free Online Prescribed Fire Course for Outreach Professionals

NC State Extension, University of Florida, Southern Fire Exchange, Clemson University Cooperative Extension, and the USDA developed an online self-paced course covering the basics of wildfire and prescribed fire. Cooperative Extension Service: Prescribed Fire is designed to equip individuals with the ability to educate and train their local communities on the basics of prescribed fire. Since the course was published in 2022, over 1000 students have enrolled.

For May, 2023, we are offering a special session of this course in a synchronous format for people that are interested in moving through the course with a cohort of fellow students, with live guidance from an instructor, and with opportunities to engage with experienced fire practitioners and scientists.

  • Extension and other outreach professionals in the natural resources are invited!
  • Course schedule: May 1 to June 2
    • The course takes 4-5 hours to complete and is organized into 8 modules. Students that enroll in this special session will be provided a schedule that will guide them through the modules over 4 weeks (1 – 1.5 hours each week).
  • Three live meetings
    • There will be three live online meetings where students will get the chance to meet each other, share their personal experiences related to the course content, ask questions, and engage with experts in the wildland fire domain. Live sessions will also be recorded.
    • Meeting times TBD.
  • Optional in-person workshop
    • We will also be hosting a free in-person workshop in Eastern North Carolina June 7 – 9 that is designed to complement this course with interactive, field-based activities and classroom training. Students are invited to attend this workshop as a way to further develop their ability to communicate and apply the wildfire and prescribed fire knowledge gained in this course.

  4. Once you are logged in to the course:
    1. Click “People” on the left
