Pine Management in Conservation Landscapes Course (Sept. 10-12, 2013)

Pine Management in Conservation Landscapes
September 10-12, 2013

Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, Newton, GA &               Greenwood Plantation, Thomasville, GA

 About the Course

There is increasing interest among landowners in practicing a holistic-based system of forestry where all the resources of the forest are considered in a style of management that doesn’t emphasize one over the other, while managing for ecological integrity and resource sustainability. Such a system has been practiced for more than 75 years on plantations in the Red Hills of southwest Georgia and northwest Florida. The Stoddard-Neel System (SNS) is a method of uneven-age forest management that was developed on the region’s world-famous quail plantations by Herbert Stoddard and Leon Neel. It is a philosophy of resource management that manages the system as a whole, using natural processes such as fire and mimicking the patterns of natural disturbance that shaped the native longleaf pine forests.

Come join us as we tour the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at Robert Woodruff’s famed Ichauway Plantation where we will view ongoing research on the resource management of longleaf pine ecosystems. We will also visit Greenwood Plantation in Thomasville, GA, where the SNS has been practiced for more than 75 years. Guided by Jones Center staff and area plantation managers, we will learn firsthand how the Stoddard-Neel System was developed to accommodate sustainable timber management, bobwhite quail management in a conservation landscape and the integration of nongame & game wildlife, timber, recreation and aesthetics in the land management of the Red Hills’ unique landscape.
