Jerry Fox Memorial Scholarship Established

David A. Fox ’94, has established the Jerry H. Fox Scholarship to honor the memory and accomplishments of his father, the late Jerry H. Fox ’60.

Jerry Fox ’60 Wood Technology

Originally from Roxboro, Jerry Fox attended NC State on the Pat Brown Lumber Company Scholarship and graduated from the School of Forestry in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in Wood Technology. During his undergraduate years, Jerry was an active member of the Forestry Club, served as President of the Forest Products Research Society and Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Society. After graduation, Jerry was an accomplished banker and entrepreneur, as well as a proud husband and father.

David Fox established this endowment to support students at NC State University that embody the same characteristics and determination and academic excellence, as well as the strong passion for sustainable forestry and the natural environment, as his father.

The scholarship will provide opportunities for undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Natural Resources who have shown exemplary academic performance and merit and are pursuing a degree in the area of sustainable forestry, including but not limited to healthy forests, biomass and energy, wood production and new bio-product development.

The college is proud to help honor Jerry Fox and is grateful to David Fox for his generous support of our students.

NCSU Students Host National SAF President Joann Cox

Joann Meyer Cox, CF/FCA, of Morrisville, NC, is the 2013 President of the Society of American Foresters, the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States.

The student chapter of Society of American Foresters (SAF) at NC State University will hold a chapter meeting on Thursday, September 12, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with special guest speaker Joann Cox, president of national SAF. The meeting is open to the entire NCSU community and the interested public. It will be held in Jordan Hall Addition, room 1218, and parking around the building is free after 5 p.m.

Student chapter members are especially interested in having SAF professional foresters on hand because the audience may include many who are new to forestry and natural resources management.

PRTM Team + Volunteers = Quality Visitor Impact Data

How do managers at the Rachel Carson and Masonboro Island Reserves learn about how visitors impact Reserve land and resources?

In the past, monitoring visitor use of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve sites presented a challenge due to limited resources and staff time.

However, a recent partnership between the Coastal Reserve and North Carolina State University focuses on training Reserve volunteers to monitor visitor use and impacts on natural environments.

This will ultimately improve staff understanding of how people use the Reserve and help tailor stewardship efforts to benefit both visitors and the Reserves’ natural resources.

Dr. Yu-Fai Leung of N C State’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management department is interested in studying sustainable visitor use in protected areas, and how participatory monitoring of visitor impacts can provide useful data to protected area managers.

As federal and state protected lands with significant public use for recreation and wildlife viewing, the Coastal Reserve is an ideal study area to implement Dr. Leung’s research on using volunteers to monitor visitor use and impacts.

Dr. Leung states that data collection by volunteers can “benefit the public good of these coastal resources by balancing visitor use and conservation goals.”

New Scholarship Will Honor PSE Alumnus C. Allen Sanders

The College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University is honored to announce that C. Allen Sanders has named the NC State Natural Resources Foundation, Inc. in his estate plans. When funded, the C. Allen Sanders Paper Science and Engineering Scholarship Endowment will award merit based scholarships to promising students.

Charles Allen Sanders is a 1985 graduate of NC State’s Paper Science and Engineering program. Allen has been very active in the growth, promotion and success of the paper science industry in the southeast. He started his career with Boise Cascade in DeRidder, LA before moving to Bowater. In 25 years with Bowater, Allen worked in various locations and capacities rising to Vice President – US Operations. He is currently employed with RockTenn, one of North America’s leading producers of corrugated and consumer packaging and recycling solutions.

Merit-based awards will be made from this endowment to an undergraduate student enrolled in paper science and engineering in the College of Natural Resources. Awards will be for one academic year and may be renewed based on specific criteria being met.

Paper Science & Engineering (PSE) is an applied engineering discipline related to chemical and process engineering. Its original purpose was to provide specialized training for chemical-type engineers in the specific science, terminology, technology, and engineering principles related to the production of pulp and paper. The paper industry is one of the largest and most successful chemical process industries in North America. The PSE program in NC State’s College of Natural Resources has an outstanding reputation and graduates from the program enjoy some of the highest salaries and placement rates of all the programs at NC State. The PSE B.S. degree permits students to enter the paper industry and many other related industries.

Three CNR Graduate Students Named 2013-14 Global Change Fellows

Steven Grodsky, Jennifer Niemuth and David Zietlow, graduate students from the Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources in the College of Natural Resources were among seven NC State University graduate students selected by the SE Climate Science Center as Global Change Fellows for 2013-14.

Grodsky is helping to understand the potential environmental consequences of harvesting wood biomass for use in green energy production.

Niemuth is studying the physiologic basis of cold stun in sea turtles. Her work will help to better understand their susceptibility to climate change and predict future cold stuns events.

Zietlow is studying energy and water balances of contrasting forest types in the lower North Carolina coastal plain with a focus on the effects of land use and climate changes on evapotranspiration.

The Global Change Fellowship is a program designed to provide financial, scientific, and professional development support for graduate students who are interested in multidisciplinary research related to climate and global change.
