NC Woody Biomass Amasses Awards

NC State Extension Forestry and the Forestry and Environmental
Outreach Program (FEOP)
have been honored again for their hard work in developing and delivering the NC Woody Biomass Program. The group received the 2008-2009 Awards for Excellence of the Southern Extension Forest Resource Specialists (Silver award level). The NC Woody Biomass Program is a comprehensive program directed towards utilities, industries, natural resource professionals, policy makers, environmental leaders, landowners and others. The program’s goal is to provide education and materials that promote economic opportunities related to renewable energy derived from woody biomass.

Earlier this year, the NC Woody Biomass Team won the 2009 Innovator Award from the Southern Growth Policies Board and received recognition by the NC Association of Cooperative Extension Specialist as the Outstanding Subject Matter Program Developed by a Team.

NC Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) Team Places among Top at Nationals

Media Release

The North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program team traveled to Zwolle, Louisiana, for the 2009 National WHEP Contest in July. Team members were Will Buslinger from Caswell County, Melissa Gold from Guilford County, and Rebecca Warren from Haywood County.  Ruth Buslinger and Tanya Gold were the team coaches. Sixty-two youth from 16 states participated in the national contest with events including wildlife identification, general wildlife knowledge, and on-site recommendation of wildlife management practices. Additionally, teams created a written wildlife management plan, which each team member individually defended before a panel of judges.    

The team returned to North Carolina with many awards, including 6th Place Overall and 4th in the Written Wildlife Management Plan event.  Ms. Gold placed 13th in the Overall individual scores. Mr. Buslinger placed 8th in Oral Defense of the Wildlife Plan, and 17th Overall in individual scores.

NC State University Students Win Under Armour Collegiate National Bass Fishing Championship

NC State University wood products senior Will White and textiles engineering senior Chris Wood win the 2009 National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.  

Both from North Carolina, neither Wood nor White had much experience with river fishing coming into the championship, and this was only Wood's second tournament with College Bass, but they did rise to the top-two from a club that has more than 40 members to represent North Carolina State. 

White is the president of the NC State Bass Pack Fishing Club.

NC Woody Biomass Initiative Wins Innovator Award

NC Cooperative Extension Forestry Specialist educating landowners about woody biomass harvesting and marketsThis multifaceted program has reached over 1,000 landowners, resource professionals, and utilities specialist since 2008, and won praise earlier this year from the NC Association of Cooperative Extension for its educational component.

NC State Faculty Receive Fulbright Scholar Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Three North Carolina State University faculty members have been chosen to participate in the Fulbright Scholars Program to teach and study abroad in the 2009-2010 academic year.
Each year Fulbright grants are awarded to researchers, teachers and administrators of universities around the world. The grants allow for up to one year of research abroad at host universities. The recipients are chosen on the basis of academic or professional achievement, and leadership potential in their respective fields.
This year’s Fulbright Scholars are Dr. William J. Kinsella, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, Dr. Nora Haenn, an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Dr. Bronson Bullock, an associate professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
