Mattocks – Forest Management ’59, Named to NCSU Board of Trustees

Bob Mattocks ’59 of New Bern has been appointed by Governor Beverly Perdue to the NC State University Board of Trustees, effective September 1, 2011.

Mattocks who majored in forest management at NC State is retired chairman and CEO of Jenkins Gas and Oil of New Bern.  During his career, he was involved in various propane gas enterprises as well as real estate development.  Mattocks and his wife Carol reside in New Bern and have three adult children.

He shared memories of his student days at NC State with the NCSU Alumni Association. Watch the video .

Mattocks served previously on the board from 2001-2009.  He replaces Steve Warren, whose term expired this year.

North Carolina State University’s Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members; eight are elected by the UNC Board of Governors, four are appointed by the governor, and the remaining member is the president of the student government.

Book Tells Story of Bob Jordan – Forestry ’54

Jordan III ’54, former chair of the NC State Board of Trustees and former lieutenant governor, will discuss and sign copies of the new book about his life, The Man from Mount Gilead, written by Ned Cline.

Mr. Jordan will also talk about his experiences as a student at NC State (including working in the stacks at D. H. Hill Library!), where he graduated with honors in Forestry.

Jordan was a state Senator from 1976 to 1984 and was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1985.  President of his family-owned business Jordan Lumber Company, Jordan has served on the State Board of Education and Community College Board, as well as the UNC Board of Governors, and was chairman of the North Carolina Economic Development Board.

The entire Jordan Family are loyal supporters of the College of Natural Resources at NC State, boasting four natural resources alumni in the family.

Several family members have served on the boards of the NC Forestry & Natural Resources Foundations.  They also established the the Jordan Distinguished Professorate, the Jordan Graduate Fellowship and the Jordan Family Scholarship in support of innovation in natural resources.

Jordan Hall, one of the College’s main buildings on campus is named in honor of the Jordan family patriarch.

Commencement Largest in College’s History

Degree candidates process at 2011 NC State College of Natural Resources Commencmeent CeremonyClose to 250 undergraduate and graduate students received their diplomas from the NC State University College of Natural Resources at the McKimmon Center on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 1:30 p.m in the largest commencement ceremony in the College’s history. 

Over 1000 family and friends joined the  faculty and staff to celebrate the students’ accomplishments and wish them well as they begin the next phase of their lives.

Dr. Toddi Steelman - 2011 CNR Outstanding Teacher - delivers 2011 Commencement AddressToddi Steelman, a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, gave the commencement address.   Dr. Steelman was the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award this year for the College of Natural Resources.   Her words of advice encouraged the students to stay off the couch, keep it real by making human connections, and make deliberate, active choices about what they want out of their lives. 
 
awarding diplomasBrenda Brickhouse, President of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation, Inc., congratulated each of the graduates and presented them with a brass and wood NC State business card holder and asked them to keep in touch with the college and NC State throughout their lives. 

Other speakers for the ceremony included Dr. Robert Brown, Dean and Dr. Adrianna Kirkman, Associate Dean for Academic  Affairs. 

A student speaker from each of the college’s three departments shared their own life experiences and words of wisdom. Those students include:  Ms. Genevieve Pike – Forest Biomaterials;  Mr. Andrew McEachran – Forestry and Environmental Resources; and Mr. Steven Houg – Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.

Congratulations to the Class of 2011!  We wish them well and are confident that each will make a difference in the world and serve as outstanding representatives of the College of Natural Resources and North Carolina State University!

NEWS RELEASE

The College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce the selection of our 2010 Distinguished Alumnus -Dr. Ernie Alexander.

 Dr. Alexander ’67, ’72, combined an undergraduate degree in pulp and paper technology with a PhD in chemical engineering to build a successful career in the forest products industry. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Alexander joined Westvaco, a leading paper, packaging and specialty chemicals corporation, as a research engineer.  After seven years, he was transferred to Covington Mill as supervisor of the newly formed paper process group. Dr. Alexander spent 23 years at Covington Mill, taking on positions of increasing responsibility, including technical director, pulp mill superintendent and pulping expansion manager.

 After the merger of Westvaco and Mead Corporation in 2002, Dr. Alexander joined the company’s corporate engineering department, which was relocated to NC State’s Centennial Campus in 2006.

There, he led a team of production superintendents from all MeadWestvaco Mills to handle property conservation and operational improvements. Specifically, Dr. Alexander supervised major capital improvement projects at plants in Texas and South Carolina.

 Dr. Alexander retired in 2009 and launched his own consulting firm to provide valuable advice to forest products companies, including his former employer, MeadWestvaco.

 Throughout his career, Dr. Alexander has been a strong supporter of the NC State College of Natural Resources.  Following his retirement from MeadWestvaco he became a volunteer employee in the College’s development office assisting with industry and foundation relations, student mentoring and fundraising.

 Understanding the importance of donors to the university’s future, Dr. Alexander and his wife Beverly established the Ernie and Beverly Alexander Endowed Scholarship in Paper Science and Engineering at NC State. 

 Dr. Alexander accepted the distinguished alumnus honor on January 29, 2011 at the NC State University Alumni Association’s “Evening of Stars” Gala in Raleigh.  He lives in Cary, NC with his wife, Beverly.
