NC State University Students Win Under Armour Collegiate National Bass Fishing Championship

NC State University wood products senior Will White and textiles engineering senior Chris Wood win the 2009 National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Both from North Carolina, neither Wood nor White had much experience with river fishing coming into the championship, and this was only Wood's second tournament with College Bass, but they did rise to the top-two from a club that has more than 40 members to represent North Carolina State.

White is the president of the NC State Bass Pack Fishing Club.

Home Turf To Open for NCSU Golf

The Raleigh area will have a new course at N.C. State's Centennial Campus, one designed by Arnold Palmer, who is scheduled to return July 31 for its grand opening….

Head professional Rob Yanovitch came to the Poole Golf Course from Hasentree, a northern Wake County development with a Tom Fazio-designed golf course. He said a part of the enjoyment of being with the new course was working with NCSU's Professional Golf Management and Turfgrass Management programs, which will be centered at the course.

Venditti Visits South Africa as Fulbright Specialist

Jimmy Paulk (left) and Rich Venditti (right) in South Africa Dr. Richard Venditti, an associate professor in the Department of Wood and Paper Science at NC State traveled to South Africa through the Fulbright Specialists Program. His visit was hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal in April 2009. During his visit, Dr. Venditti gave presentations about academic programs and research activities in wood and paper science at NC State. He had the opportunity to consult and conduct extensive conversations about technical paper technology and science topics with representatives of industry, academic and research groups. The resulting new contacts and potential for research and academic partnerships will be of great benefit to the department.

Dr. Venditti also greatly enjoyed learning about the paper industry and paper research in South Africa, the SA culture, history and politics, visiting very interesting sights, and meeting many paper industry people from mill managers to researchers to technicians.

NC Woody Biomass Initiative Wins Innovator Award

A chipper utilized on-site during a harvesting operation North Carolina State University Extension Forestry's NC Woody Biomass initiative was recently honored as the North Carolina recipient of the 2009 Innovator Award from the Southern Growth Policies Board. The award recognizes initiatives

that are improving economic opportunities and the quality of life in southern regions.

NC Woody Biomass is a research-based, educational initiative that promotes economic opportunities related to renewable energy

derived from woody biomass.

NC Cooperative Extension Forestry Specialist educating landowners about woody biomass harvesting and markets This multifaceted program has reached over 1,000 landowners, resource professionals, and utilities specialist since 2008, and won praise earlier this year from the NC Association of Cooperative Extension for its educational component.
